As a musician Nick Garrett originally gained notoriety through years of live performances, radio airplay, an indie chart topping single, and international distributions of his music. 4 EP’s and dozens of songs as well as his music appearing in some TV movies gave Garrett the momentum he needed to shift into different aspects of music. After performing for several years, Garrett began producing bands. In addition to receiving credit for the production of several notable works, Garrett also shifted his focus to music education and in the winter of 2004 opened the Garrett Music Academy.
Garrett Music Academy is Southern Maryland's premiere facility for private music lessons. They offer top-notch teachers from around the world, and classrooms equipped with the same resources you would find in the music department at any reputable University. They also offer a small music store for their clients where they can buy or rent instruments, books, sheet music, and various accessories. One can also spend time in the recording studio learning about production/engineering or laying down tracks with a band. During the summer they even offer exciting music camps, one of which is among the most popular in Southern Maryland.
Now, at 28 years old, Garrett has been teaching music for nine years, and has authored and published a guitar method book, which is being used in some of our public schools. Nick continues to expand into other aspects of community service. He sits on Calvert County’s Tourism Advisory Commission and was recently appointed chairman. Nick is also on the Library Board of Trustees and volunteers regularly with several community outreach and political organizations. He works periodically as a legislative aide for State Senator Roy Dyson, and through his community organizing and fundraising has raised $20,000.00 since 2004 for non-profits and individuals in need. He has been part of a committee that orchestrated road safety and teen-driving initiatives locally. Most recently, Nick worked alongside community and church leaders to open a coffee house that serves as a job training facility for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Nick continues to teach guitar full time, is a published author and continues his community work. Most recently he was awarded for his mentoring work with teens at the annual Calvert County Mentoring Partnership Breakfast and has been appointed as Vice Chair for Calvert County’s juvenile drug court steering committee.
